Feelings run deep in small towns, and West Virginia's Dogwood community is no exception. Will Hatfield has harbored an undying love for Karin Ashworth since their spelling bee days in middle school. Years later, a horrible tragedy tears their lives apart, sending Karin into despondency, while Will faces jail time for the accident. At his release, Will's years in prison have only intensified his feelings for Karin, and he returns to Dogwood in noble pursuit of her. His goodness and humility lead readers to believe that there is more to his character than the prejudiced label the unforgiving townspeople of Dogwood have given him.
